Qualcomm’s Mobile Computing Platform (MCP) will be available as a factory-installed option on Navistar Class 5 to 8 vehicles beginning in the fourth quarter of 2008, the two companies announced.

Under the terms of the agreement, Navistar dealers will resell Qualcomm’s MCP throughout the U.S., allowing Navistar customers to purchase International brand trucks with the system installed by the dealer.

"Trucking companies will now have expanded access to our OmniVision Transportation suite of services, and customers can take advantage of the added support they get from a combined International dealer and Qualcomm customer support network,” said Norm Ellis, vp of transportation and logistics sales & service for Qualcomm Enterprise Services.

According to Qualcomm, while the company has relationships with OEMs for pre-wire installation, the distribution agreement with Navistar is the first to offer full installation to an OEM.

Navistar customers will be able to access Qualcomm’s OmniVision transportation services, which enable two-way data communications and value-added services via its in-cab hardware, software and network infrastructure, Qualcomm said. Featuring a color touchscreen with remote control, OmniVision provides text-to-speech capability that allows drivers to listen and replay messages without needing to stop.

"Our customers will gain additional operational efficiency by leveraging OmniVision Transportation services,” said Jeff Lillig, director, Navistar Electronics. “This proven telematics solution provides near real-time access to critical information, helping customers run their businesses more efficiently for improved operational performance and profit.”
