Four trucks equipped with the Westport Innovations liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel system have entered service at Wal-Mart's Apple Valley, CA, distribution center.
The new Peterbilt 386 trucks will be partially funded by the Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District's (MDAQMD) Mobile Source Emission Reductions Competitive Bidding program. According to Westport, the objective of the project is to demonstrate the efficiency and emissions reduction achieved in heavy-duty trucks spec'd with Westport LNG fuel systems.
Westport's LNG system for heavy-duty trucks, which is based on the Cummins ISX engine, includes LNG fuel tanks, fuel injectors and cryogenic fuel pumps.
“We are continually looking for new, innovative ways to reduce the emissions of our fleet,” said Tim Yatsko, senior vp-transportation for Wal-Mart. “This program will give us an opportunity to evaluate Westport's low-emissions solution in real-world operations.”
