Snow, diesel prices, and gas prices are falling. The national average on-highway diesel price dropped 6 cents to $3.607, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) on December 16. Gas prices dropped 5 cents to $2.895. 

What are the current diesel prices across the U.S.?

Here are this week’s diesel price highlights from each region of the U.S.:

  • Rocky Mountain: The biggest drop in diesel prices this week occurred in the Rockies,  where prices fell by 11 cents to $3.385.
  • West Coast: Off the West Coast, diesel prices dropped 8 cents to $4.294. Without including California, diesel prices dropped 7 cents to $3.871.
  • Midwest: In the Midwest, diesel prices dropped 7 cents to $3.567.
  • Gulf Coast: Off the Gulf Coast, diesel prices dropped 6 cents to $3.267.
  • East Coast: Off the East Coast, diesel prices dropped 3 cents to $3.706.

According to AAA Motor Club (AAA), the current national diesel price average is $3.641. This is 3 cents higher than EIA’s current estimate and 15 cents higher than this time last year.

What are the current gasoline prices across the U.S.?

The current national average on-highway gasoline price is $2.895, according to EIA, 5 cents lower than last week’s average. 

Here are this week’s gasoline price highlights from each region of the U.S.:

  • West Coast: The biggest drop in gasoline prices this week occurred off the West Coast, where prices fell 11 cents to $3.851. Without including California, gas prices dropped 11 cents to $3.501.
  • Rocky Mountain: In the Rockies, gas prices dropped 10 cents to $2.547.
  • East Coast: Off the East Coast, gas prices dropped 5 cents to $2.842.
  • Midwest: In the Midwest, gas prices dropped 3 cents to $2.690.
  • Gulf Coast: Off the Gulf Coast, gas prices dropped 0.1 cents to $2.492.

According to AAA, the current national gasoline price average is $2.907. This is 1 cent higher than EIA’s current estimate and 12 cents lower than this time last year.

In a recent press release, AAA said, “Gas prices are the lowest they’ve been in four years. The national average has stayed below the $3 mark since hitting $2.99 on December 2. As a record number of travelers prepare to hit the road later this month, they’ll be paying less than they were last holiday season when the national average was $3.04 to close out 2024.”
