Diesel and gas prices continue to drop into 2026. The national average on-highway diesel price dropped 2 cents to $3.459, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) on January 13. Gas prices dropped 2 cents to $2.779.

Here are this week’s diesel price highlights from each region of the U.S.:

  • Rocky Mountain: The biggest drop in diesel prices this week occurred in the Rockies, down 4 cents to $3.185.
  • Midwest: In the Midwest, diesel prices dropped 2 cents to $3.365.
  • West Coast: Off the West Coast, diesel prices dropped 2 cents to $4.110. Without including California, diesel prices dropped 1 cent to $3.674.
  • East Coast: Off the East Coast, diesel prices dropped 2 cents to $3.613.
  • Gulf Coast: Off the Gulf Coast, diesel prices dropped 1 cent to $3.160.

According to AAA Motor Club (AAA), the current national diesel price average is $3.506. This is 5 cents higher than EIA’s current estimate and 5 cents lower than this time last year.

What are the current gasoline prices across the U.S.?

The current national average on-highway gasoline price is $2.779, according to EIA, 2 cents lower than last week’s average. 

Here are this week’s gasoline price highlights from each region of the U.S.:

  • West Coast: The biggest drop in gasoline prices this week occurred off the West Coast, down 6 cents to $3.649. Without including California, gas prices dropped 6 cents to $3.280. 
  • East Coast: Off the East Coast, gas prices dropped 4 cents to $2.741.
  • Midwest: In the Midwest, gas prices rose 2 cents to $2.604.
  • Rocky Mountain: In the Rockies, gas prices rose 2 cents to $2.422.
  • Gulf Coast: Off the Gulf Coast, gas prices rose 0.3 cents to $2.375. 

According to AAA, the current national gasoline price average is $2.820. This is 4 cents higher than EIA’s current estimate and 25 cents lower than this time last year. 

In a recent press release, AAA stated: “The last time the national average for a gallon of regular gas was this low was back in March of 2021. Crude oil prices remain relatively unchanged from the end of 2025 and unaffected amid questions about Venezuela’s impact on the oil market. Currently, the global oil supply is strong, as OPEC+, the coalition of oil-exporting countries, says it’s not planning any production hikes in the first quarter of 2026 due to lower demand.”
