Diesel and gasoline prices surge across U.S. regions amid global supply concerns

As the conflict in the Middle East heats up again, diesel and gas prices continue to spike. The national average on-highway diesel price rose 29 cents to $5.640, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) on May 5. Gas prices rose 33 cents to $4.452.

What are the current diesel prices across the U.S.?

Here are this week’s diesel price highlights from each region of the U.S.:

  • Midwest: The biggest increase in diesel prices this week occurred in the Midwest by 61 cents to $5.742.  
  • Rocky Mountain: In the Rockies, diesel prices rose 25 cents to $5.517.
  • Gulf Coast: Off the Gulf Coast, diesel prices rose 17 cents to $5.178.
  • West Coast: Off the West Coast, diesel prices rose 10 cents to $6.631. Without including California, diesel prices rose 7 cents to $6.000. 
  • East Coast: Off the East Coast, diesel prices rose 8 cents to $5.504.

According to AAA Motor Club (AAA), the current national diesel price average is $5.659. This is 2 cents higher than EIA’s current estimate and $2.04 higher than this time last year.

What are the current gasoline prices across the U.S.?

The current national average on-highway gasoline price is $4.123, according to EIA, 8 cents lower than last week’s average. 

Here are this week’s gasoline price highlights from each region of the U.S.:

  • Midwest: The biggest increase in gasoline prices this week occurred in the Midwest by 52 cents to $4.399.
  • Rocky Mountain: In the Rockies, gas prices rose 34 cents to $4.359.
  • East Coast: Off the East Coast, gas prices rose 29 cents to $4.251.
  • Gulf Coast: Off the Gulf Coast, gas prices rose 23 cents to $3.902.
  • West Coast: Off the West Coast, gas prices rose 17 cents to $5.583. Without including California, gas prices rose 17 cents to $5.135.

According to AAA, the current national gasoline price average is $4.483. This is 4 cents higher than EIA’s current estimate and $1.32 higher than this time last year. 

In a recent press release, AAA stated, “Oil prices surged above $100/barrel with no indication of when the Strait of Hormuz will reopen. Gas prices are the highest they’ve been in four years, since late July 2022.”
