Rivian expands Georgia plant capacity to 300,000 electric vehicles annually
Rivian recently announced it is increasing planned production capacity for its Georgia manufacturing plant to 300,000 vehicles annually, a 50% increase over the original plan. The expansion is intended to reduce cost per unit while supporting future scaling of operations at the Stanton Springs North facility.
“We’re very excited to partner with the U.S. Department of Energy to grow our manufacturing footprint in Georgia,” R.J. Scaringe, Rivian founder and CEO, said. “R2 dramatically expands our market opportunity. The thousands of dedicated people who will soon work in our Georgia plant will be instrumental to Rivian’s growth as we scale American manufacturing and work to ensure that the U.S. retains its leadership in innovation and technology.”
Rivian said it expects vertical construction to begin in 2026, with first loan draws anticipated in early 2027 and vehicle production targeted for late 2028. Read more…
Proterra Onyx battery platform adds U.S. cell option to strengthen EV supply chain
Proterra will add a U.S. cell option to its Onyx battery platform, with shipments beginning in Q1 2027 to support domestic supply chain resilience for heavy-duty transportation and industrial OEMs. The company, which develops electrification and battery systems for commercial applications, is targeting greater localization of battery materials and components as demand for domestic content grows.
“The market is asking for greater supply chain certainty and stronger domestic content,” Chris Bailey, CEO of Proterra, said. “We’re answering. This investment ensures we can deliver both while continuing to lead in performance and safety.”
The Onyx platform is designed for heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, offering high-energy density, durability, and safety performance. The update is part of a broader effort to strengthen supply continuity and reduce risk across its battery sourcing network. Read more…
