Customers can now spec new Peterbilt Motor Co. heavy-duty trucks with the Bendix Wingman ACB (Active cruise with braking) safety option.
The system is a forward-collision warning and mitigation device using full vehicle and braking system integration. Wingman, from Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems, provides warnings and proactive interventions to drivers to help avoid collisions.
“Peterbilt is committed to highway safety, and our choice of Bendix Wingman ACB demonstrates that commitment,” said Landon Sproull, Peterbilt chief engineer. “Peterbilt customers expect the best in performance and quality. We can trust Bendix to help us deliver it.”
Wingman uses a radar sensor mounted to the front of the vehicle which monitors the distance between the truck and the vehicle in front of it. With the cruise control on and a speed set, Wingman will warn and act if necessary by reducing the throttle, engaging the engine retarder and applying the foundation brakes, if necessary, to maintain the proper following distance.
When cruise control is not engaged, the system will still provide alerts to the driver.
“Bendix is thrilled to be partnering with Peterbilt to deliver this exciting safety technology to their customers,” said Fred Andersky, Bendix director of marketing – controls. “It’s another milestone for Bendix in helping to keep our roadways safer and fleet operating margins strong.”
Data on following distance measures and stability interventions is provided to the fleet from the system.
The system is available on highway vehicles from Peterbilt, Kenworth, International, Mack and Volvo.
