U.S. and Canadian Class 8 deliveries dip in January

But medium-duty sales see an upswing, WardsAuto reports

Class 8 deliveries in January dropped in the U.S. and Canada during the first month of 2016, though U.S. Class 8 sales remained at near-record highs, while sales of Class 4-7 medium-duty in the U.S. witnessed a strong uptick, with a more mild increase experienced in the Canadian market, according to data tracked by WardsAuto.

Heavy truck deliveries came to 15,949 units in the first month of 2016 or 0.5% lower than the same month last year, WardsAuto said, though those numbers represent a nine-year high for Class 8 sales in January, excluding the 17,373 units sold in 2015.

By contrast, U.S. medium-duty truck sales totaled 15,260 units in January, up 24.2% compared to the same month in 2015.

By contrast, Canadian medium- and heavy-duty truck sales fell 5.4% in January, with deliveries totaling 2,431 units, down from 2,783 units in the same month last year.

Class 8 deliveries slipped 21% to 1,552 units while medium-duty deliveries topped 879 units, up 9.1% from the 656 units sold in January 2015.
