In February, FleetOwner released its 2026 FleetOwner 500: For-Hire list, which ranks the largest motor carrier and commercial fleet operations in the U.S. This year, the for-hire list saw shake-ups in all but the top five spots for the second year in a row.

In addition to creating this list, FleetOwner also breaks these fleets down into categories, either by equipment or by the fleet's main cargo type or segment. This media gallery will focus on heavy-haul fleets; upcoming FleetOwner top 10 lists will rank fleets by other subsections.

Heavy-haul trucking involves the movement of oversized cargo, such as mobile homes and large construction, military, or farming equipment. According to Motive, the federal government classifies cargo as a heavy load when it exceeds:

  • 80,000 lb. of gross vehicle weight
  • 20,000 lb. of single axle weight
  • 34,000 lb. of tandem axle weight

Transporting such large loads requires specialized training, permits, and routing.

The heavy-haul top 10 this year saw major adjustments as for-hire fleets grew massively, jumping up in the 500 rankings. Bennet and Bessemer held onto the first two spots in this top 10, but DSV rose to No. 3 after leaping 307 spots in the overall 500 list. Also new to this top 10 and the overall 500 list is Barnhart Crane and Rigging at No. 109. At No. 10, Paul Logistics enters the rankings after jumping 76 spots in the 500 list. It’ll be interesting to see how these fleets grow into 2027.
