2026 FleetOwner 500: Top private transportation fleets
Transportation companies that specialize in trains or buses are not typically thought to maintain a fleet of trucks. However, many of these companies operate a private fleet for safety, repair, and other needs. These fleets often, if not mostly, include hi-rail trucks that can be driven on highways or train tracks.
The list of private fleets last year included only four private fleets. CPKC joined the 500 list this year at No. 427 and claimed No. 5 on this top transportation fleets list. The rest of this list remains mostly the same, though with BNSF Railway claiming the top spot and Union Pacific Railroad dropping to No. 2.
The 2026 FleetOwner 500: Private list ranks the most prominent private carriers in the U.S. by total registered power units. FleetOwner breaks these fleets down into categories, either by equipment or by the fleet's main cargo type or segment. This media gallery will focus on private transportation fleets.
- BNSF Railway (up one spot compared to 2025)
- Union Pacific Railroad (down one spot)
- Norfolk Southern Railway
- Amtrak
- CPKC (new entry)
