Teletrac Navman releases research aimed at improving fleet equipment utilization
Key takeaways
- Teletrac Navman research shows fleets struggle with data access, leaving equipment underutilized up to 50% of the time.
- Fragmented systems and manual logs limit equipment visibility, pushing fleets toward reactive decisions and extra rentals.
- Stronger telematics integration and real-time data use improve utilization, maintenance planning, and asset efficiency.
Teletrac Navman recently released findings from its “Mobilizing the Future of Fleets: 2026 Equipment Utilization Edition,” highlighting challenges in fleet equipment utilization.
The company, which provides a connected mobility platform, found that 87% of fleets have invested in digital tools to monitor utilization, yet many are not fully leveraging those systems.
The research shows 75% of fleets still rely on manual logs either as a primary method or alongside digital tools, despite concerns about accuracy and data quality. Only 28% of respondents report having a fully implemented digital tracking system, pointing to a gap between technology adoption and operational use.
According to the findings, assets are frequently unused up to 50% of the time, while 87% of operators believe improved location intelligence would enhance utilization. Real-time visibility and integrated data were identified as critical factors for improving efficiency and enabling proactive asset management.
Maintenance remains a key challenge, with 32% of respondents citing it as a frequent disruptor to project timelines. To offset downtime, 27% of organizations report renting or purchasing additional equipment, reflecting the impact of maintenance-related disruptions on capacity planning.
The report also found that 67% of organizations experience equipment hoarding, where assets are held onsite but not in use because of uncertainty around maintenance and scheduling. This behavior can lead to reduced availability and increased operating costs.
“The role of telematics is rapidly evolving across our industry,” Alain Samaha, CEO of Teletrac Navman, stated. “Digital technology adoption across equipment fleets is widespread, but adoption alone is no longer the end goal—it’s integration. The challenge has evolved from simply collecting data to embedding it into everyday operations in a coordinated and efficient way.”
