LAS VEGAS— Qualcomm Inc. announced it has added new security features, which include a vehicle immobilization device, to its OmniTRACS satellite mobile communications system.

The vehicle immobilization device (VID) connects with the OmniTRACS system to allow authorized truck operators to put the vehicle in what the company calls a “restricted mobility condition.” For valuable or hazardous loads, companies could customize the frequency of vehicle position reports based on commodity codes, high-risk areas or out-of-route violations.

A wireless transmitter allows drivers to send an emergency notification along with their location.

“These new features increase the security value propositions of OmniTRACS for hazardous materials and high-value cargo carriers,” said Mark Bauckman, Qualcomm Wireless Business Solutions director of business development.
