In what is being seen as a win for farmers and a loss for truckers, Minnesota will become the first state to mandate the use of biodiesel. The law requires that all diesel fuel sold in Minnesota eventually contain 2% biodiesel fuel oil — renewable fuel derived from agriculture plant oils or animal fats — that will come primarily from soybeans. The rule, which will go into effect no later than June 30, 2005, could be delayed if biodiesel producers have difficulty ramping up production. Opponents from trucking say that the law could raise the price of fuel by about 2¢/gal. and could void some engine warranties.
