The United States Postal Service (USPS) said today that Postal employees across the country are continuing to maintain normal collection, processing and delivery operations following Tuesday’s tragic events in New York City and Washington.

"The best thing we can do for America right now is to keep the mail moving," said postmaster general John E. Potter.

Mail continues to flow to its destinations and post offices throughout the U.S. are open to serve customers. The only exceptions are the portions of Manhattan, below 14th St., which have been severely impacted by yesterday's events.

Since nationwide air transportation was suspended by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), USPS says an expanded ground transportation network is moving mail. Once the FAA allows commercial flights to resume and carry mail, the Postal Service will use all existing means to keep residential and business mail moving.

FedEx Ground today said they have a contingency plan in place to use trucks instead of planes for its air shipments, but probably will not use it. According to published reports, FedEx took all air shipments that had been in planes at the time of the acts of terrorism and had them re-inspected before putting them in storage.
