Vision sensors and systems supplier Cognex Corp. has announced its acquisition of lane departure warning (LDW) systems developer AssistWare Technology, Inc.

AssistWare's LDW system uses a small video camera to alert drivers if they unintentionally leave their lane, or if their driving pattern becomes erratic.

A recent U.S. Dept. of Transportation study shows that AssistWare's LDW technology significantly reduces unintended lane departures, Cognex said. The technology can also alert drivers when they are wandering excessively within a lane, which usually results from fatigue.
