Clean Air Partners (CAP) has purchased a Horiba transient emissions testing station for their San Diego Research and Development facility. The $500,000 test stand will give CAP the capability of instantaneously measuring the lowest levels of engine emissions possible.

"This tester is the most accurate measuring device of its kind on the market," said Dave Morgan, the head of CAP's product development division. "The transient responsiveness of the Horiba will help us to develop cleaner burning engines for heavy-duty trucks, buses, and electric power generation equipment than what is currently available."

With the accurate transient measuring capability of the Horiba MEXA7100D, CAP will be able to quantify the amounts of nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxygen, total hydrocarbons and non-methane hydrocarbons produced by prototype engines as they are "put through the paces" of evaluation testing. This will include how the emissions change under varying loads and operating speeds.

"The Horiba's mini-dilution tunnel will let us accurately measure particulate matter on-site and thereby decrease the development cycle time for delivering new products to the market," Morgan said.
