Average spot rates experienced little change last week, according to weekly reports from FTR Transportation Intelligence and DAT Freight & Analytics.

According to FTR, total broker-posted spot rates were almost unchanged compared to last week. The firm noted that “spot rates for the current week (week 42) usually decline for dry van and flatbed equipment, but refrigerated has seen gains in recent years.” Rates were roughly up by 1.6% compared to last year.

Here is how rates and volumes changed across the three major spot market equipment types:

Dry van rates and volumes

According to FTR: Spot rates rose 2 cents after falling over 4 cents last week. Year over year, rates are up 0.6%. Dry van loads were flat week over week but up almost 7% compared to last year.

According to DAT: National linehaul spot rates remain unchanged for the second week in a row, averaging $1.70 per mile. This rate is 3% higher than last year.

Refrigerated rates and volumes

According to FTR: Spot rates increased 1 cent last week. Rates were about 5.4% higher than last year. Refrigerated loads dropped 1.2% week over week, with volumes up just 0.3% compared to last year.

According to DAT: The national seven-day rolling average for spot rates increased just under a penny per mile week over week, reaching $2.08. This rate is 4% higher than last year.

Flatbed rates and volumes

According to FTR: Spot rates rose just a tenth of a cent last week. Year over year, rates are up 1.6%. Flatbed loads dropped 1.1% last week but are up almost 22% compared to last year.

According to DAT: National linehaul spot rates were flat last week, averaging $2.07 per mile. This rate is 5% higher than last year.
