Zonar39s whitepaper highlights upcoming regulations and gives carriers a snapshot of what to expect

The ELD mandate. Safety Fitness Determination rule. Speed limiters. Drug testing. GHG Phase 2.

The trucking industry has a lot coming up on the regulatory front. Though it may seem daunting, Zonar has released a whitepaper that fleets might find useful. The whitepaper not only highlights upcoming regulations and gives carriers a snapshot of what they can expect, but it also provides insight as to what fleets might not yet know.

“We are highlighting upcoming regulations for those that are affected,” Fred Fakkema, vice president of Zonar, told Fleet Owner. “This is an in-depth look at the changes in regulations that folks may not know of and how it will impact their business – and help their business as well.”

“I think our goal as a telematics provider is to let our customers – and those who want to be our customers – know that from a compliance standpoint, we have this covered for them,” Fakkema added. “We are paying attention to the trends. We look forward – not backward – on what’s coming for them to make sure our customers are up to speed.”

Fakkema briefly discussed the upcoming ELD mandate, which is at the forefront of most fleets’ minds right now. Fleets have until December 2017 to purchase an ELD or an Automatic Onboard Recording Device (AOBRD), which is an early version of the ELD. Those who use AOBRDs will have an extra two years to line up with ELD standards.

Fakkema’s tip to fleets: “We really encourage those that haven’t purchased yet to get the AOBRD then get in line with ELD requirements,” he said. “Buy it now. Use it until 2019, and don’t worry about what’s going on with the ELD rule until then.”

The reason, he explained, is that it “will be a mess on the road side” with FMCSA trying to accomplish what it needs to before December 2017.
