Old tires never die
They just retire as playground equipment! Increasingly, Class 8 tractor tires are spending the last years of their existence as part of playgrounds all over the U.S. The truck tires in this picture — residing in the Kidsburg section of the Mid County Park outside Williamsburg, VA — reveal some of the creative uses being found for the 42-million scrap tires produced in this country annually.
Playgrounds and truck tires are a good fit, says the Consumer Products Safety Committee, because the tires are resilient and do not attract rodents or insects, retard weed growth, don't rot or decay, don't catch fire, don't leach toxins, and have a cushioning benefit for kids.
Pulling no punches
ArvinMeritor's commercial vehicle aftermarket division, based in Florence, KY, recently donated 60 pairs of professional boxing gloves to underprivileged youth boxers of the Cincinnati Golden Gloves and Police Athletic League (PAL) program.
The Golden Gloves/PAL program offers thousands of inner city youths from at-risk communities a structured program that trains them in the sport of boxing while teaching them critical skills for the main event of life - exactly why ArvinMeritor decided to lend its support, said Mike Pennington, global marketing communications director.
“Our organizations are strongly committed to maintaining an environment where individuals from diverse backgrounds and all walks of life may reach their personal best,” Pennington noted. “ArvinMeritor is proud of the choices these young people are making and we are honored to help in any way we can.”
“We share a common understanding of the power that comes from providing opportunities that enable everyone to maximize their human potential,” added Art Neuman, director of boxing for the Cincinnati Golden Gloves/PAL program. “We are grateful for ArvinMeritor's contribution to Cincinnati's young talent and our community at large.”
