Volvo Trucks has officially taken the wraps off its first Euro 6 compliant engine, a 460-hp. D13 powerplant. The D13 is found in more than one-third of all Volvo Trucks, the company said.
“The Volvo FH gets a new 460 hp. Euro 6 engine optimized for fast, fuel-efficient transportation on good roads. The first trucks with the new engine will be delivered in spring 2013,” said Mats Franzén, manager of engine strategy and planning at Volvo Trucks.
Euro 6 emissions standards go into effect on Jan. 1, 2014. The new standards will cut nitrogen oxide emissions by 20% from current Euro 5 engine standards and cut particulate emissions 50%.
“By offering our most popular engine in Euro 6 configuration, we meet the needs of a large proportion of our customers. The rest of the Euro 6 engine range will be launched well before the requirements become obligatory,” added Mats Franzén.
According to Volvo, the new standards are driving up costs for new trucks as components have been added to the vehicles to meet the requirements. However, this increased cost can be partially offset by various financial inducements and incentive packages, the company noted.
The new D13 is an in-line 6-cyl. using selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology in combination with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and a diesel particulate filter. The system is very similar to the one used on Volvo trucks used in the U.S. and Japan.
“We have developed a reliable solution that not only meets the emission requirements but also gives customers added benefits in the form of good fuel economy and trouble-free ownership,” said Franzén.
Max power for the new D13 occurs at 1,400 to 1,900 rpm with max torque between 1,000 and 1,400 rpm. The engine is standard with a Volvo I-Shift automated transmission.
