Why Daimler Truck Financial Services moved its U.S. team under one roof in Charlotte

Inside the new DTFS headquarters in Charlotte, Daimler executives are shifting from pure lending to an integrated ‘ecosystem’ approach for trucking fleets.

Key takeaways

  • Centralized operations: Daimler Truck Financial Services (DTFS) consolidated ~350 employees from Detroit, Fort Worth, and Portland into a single headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina, to boost agility, collaboration, and customer responsiveness.
  • Ecosystem and bundled solutions: DTFS is expanding beyond pure lending to offer integrated fleet solutions—combining financing, leasing, extended warranties, connectivity, and insurance into predictable single-rate packages.
  • Tech-driven fleet efficiency: The unified team is leveraging AI to speed credit approvals and telematics data to enable connected insurance and fleet asset management.

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina—As U.S. trucking operations work harder than ever to streamline after years of freight-market headwinds, Daimler Truck is consolidating its U.S. financial services team in the Carolinas.

The new Daimler Truck Financial Services (DTFS) headquarters brings roughly 350 employees under one roof, officially moving staff in after Labor Day following the closure of previous offices in Detroit, Fort Worth, and Portland. By centralizing the team in the second largest banking center in the U.S.—close to Daimler Truck North America’s major manufacturing plants—the company aims to increase agility, customer responsiveness, and overall efficiency. DTNA builds Freightliner, Western Star, and Detroit engines for North America.

“We have a fundamental belief that having the people together under one roof will increase our agility, our customer responsiveness, our efficiency, and just our working collaboration model,” Kevin Bangston, president and chief executive of DTFS North America, told industry media October 17. “And by doing this, we’ll add value to our dealers and customers.”

The two-floor office layout reflects a modern, collaborative approach to corporate culture. Breaking from traditional corporate designs, the building’s perimeter—with large windows and sweeping views of the Charlotte skyline—is dedicated entirely to workstations for the general workforce. The building places executive offices and meeting rooms in the core, ensuring the broader team benefits from natural light and views. Data and IT teams are also physically integrated with business solutions groups to foster immediate, ad hoc collaboration.

“If you’re here during the week, the energy level in this building is palpable,” Bangston noted. “People are excited to be here. Those who moved are excited to work together. We have people who’ve worked in this part of our company for 20 years and have not been in the same building together ... if we feel it here, I am quite sure the dealers and customers feel it.”

Local and global executive leadership outlined a vision that goes far beyond transactional lending during a media panel at the DTFS offices, coinciding with the American Trucking Associations (ATA) Management Conference & Exhibition (MCE) that began this weekend in Charlotte’s City Center.

Stephan Unger, chairman of DTFS, emphasized that the company is evolving from a pure financing provider into a comprehensive integrated solutions company.

“We understand trucking. We understand the operations of our truck customers. We understand the cycles. We understand their challenges, but we understand as well their opportunities,” Unger said. “We are not a bank just financing trucks. We are a trucking company understanding financing.”

The goal is to offer fleets an “ecosystem” approach by bundling financing and leasing with extended warranties, maintenance, repair, connectivity services, and insurance. This strategy is designed to simplify fleet operations, making total cost of ownership highly predictable through a single monthly rate.

“Obviously, what customers are looking for us to do is provide these bundle-type solutions that serve them and help them manage through not just the first owner cycle, but beyond,” Bangston explained. “That’s where you see the real power—the combination between financial services and DTNA—because we all play roles in that ecosystem.”

The relocated team is already accelerating the rollout of advanced technologies. DTFS is actively using artificial intelligence (AI) to speed up credit decisions, cutting the time it takes to gather data points from days to hours. Telematics data is also increasingly used to support connected insurance programs tailored for smaller fleets, aid diagnostic maintenance decisions, and help locate assets.

This consolidation comes at a critical time for the trucking industry. While the freight market shows gradual signs of recovery after a prolonged recession, sluggish freight volumes and elevated diesel prices remain a challenge. Fleets are also navigating significant uncertainty about equipment costs and strategies ahead of the EPA 2027 emissions mandates, which regulators are yet to finalize with just more than two months left in 2026.

Kevin Bangston, president and CEO of DTFS North America, noted that the company helped many fleets survive the recent downturn through restructurings and rewrites. The new headquarters will allow the team to build even more robust, flexible financing models. Ultimately, DTFS aims to let the customer dictate what is best for their operation—whether that is traditional ownership, full-service leasing, or a heavily bundled service package—while providing the agile capital to make it happen.
