DP World, a global port operator and supply chains solutions provider, recently implemented IDENTEC SOLUTIONS’ Reefer Runner at port terminals in Peru and Chile.

DP World Callao, the concession holder for the South Pier at the Port of Callao in Peru, was the first port terminal to select the system for automating and remotely performing the monitoring of refrigerated containers.

The system from IDENTEC, a global provider of wireless solutions designed to provide visibility, and improve efficiency, safety and security in industrial environments, is a solution for reducing the time it takes to monitor the temperature of reefers, the company said. The system provides real-time monitoring in an effort to reduce the risk to cargo and provide greater safety to personnel by reducing their time in the operating yard.

“As part of the commitment we have made as Peru’s first digital and automated port, this stage is very important for us since we will get real-time information 24 hours a day on temperature, alarms and energy consumption for each of our reefers,” said Gerard van den Heuvel, CEO of DP World Peru.

IDENTEC said when the project is completed, Reefer Runner will be able to monitor up to 840 reefers at the terminal, which will make for a better process for exporting and importing perishable products.

“At DP World, we focus on using the best technologies on the market as part of our commitment to service excellence,” said Marcio Mateus, director of information services and technologies at DP World Peru. “For more than a year, we have had a comprehensive digital platform in place that allows users of the South Pier to carry out import and export procedures for their cargo from their offices, which is also being extended to other companies associated with the group.

“Proof of this is not only that since 2017 we were the first to coordinate with SUNAT and implement our exit ticket to be considered as a cargo waybill, but also the implementation of OCR systems for digital reading of containers arriving at our facilities.”

In Chile, DP World San Antonio, one of the country’s largest and most modern multipurpose port terminals, was the third South American terminal to select IDENTEC’s Reefer Runner system, and the first in Chile.

IDENTEC said DP World San Antonio, which is experiencing rapid growth since its expansion in 2015, was looking for a way to reduce its reefer management workload by automating monitoring and capturing energy data.

“The implementation of an automated reefer monitoring and management tool was important to our company because it allows these activities to be done remotely, minimizing all risks related to injuries to personnel, providing information online, making operations more robust, and finally allows detailed measurement of the consumption of each type of refrigerated cargo, which delivers us valuable information to perform carbon footprint analysis by type of load,” said Mauricio Argandoña, DPW San Antonio´s senior operations manager.
