TCA honors North America’s safest fleets

March 28, 2022
Two Canadian carriers won the top honors from the truckload trade association for operating the safest fleets in 2021, based on the carriers’ safety records and accident-free miles. TCA also recognized U.S. fleets that finished among the safest.

LAS VEGAS—Two Canadian carriers were honored with Truckload Carriers Association’s highest award for exceptional fleet safety at Truckload 2022.

Recognized on stage during the final night of the trade association's annual convention, the 2021 TCA Fleet Safety Awards Grand Prizes went to Big Freight Systems of Steinbach, Manitoba, in the small carrier division (less than 25 million annual mileage) and Bison Transport of Winnipeg, Manitoba, in the large carrier division (more than 25 million annual mileage).

Both carriers, according to TCA, demonstrated exceptional safety programs and impressive accident frequency ratios in 2021. Four other carriers, who also placed in the top three for each mileage-based division, will be recognized during TCA’s 2022 Safety & Security Meeting, June 5-7, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Along with Big Freight Systems atop the small carrier division for the safety award, Trans-West Logistics of Lachine, Quebec, won second place and American Central Transport of Kansas City, Missouri, won third place. Joining Bison Transport in the large carrier division top three were CFI of Joplin, Missouri in second place and Prime Inc. of Springfield, Missouri, in third place.

“TCA is honored to recognize Big Freight Systems Inc. and Bison Transport Inc. for their amazing safety achievements,” TCA President John Lyboldt said. “This year, we received the most entries ever in the history of the Fleet Safety Awards, showing that TCA’s members are truly industry leaders when it comes to safety. Big Freight Systems and Bison are very deserving of the Grand Prize as a testament to their efforts to improve safety for all with whom they share the roadways.”

To be eligible for the TCA Fleet Safety Award Grand Prize, fleets must first submit their accident frequency ratio per million miles driven. The three carriers with the lowest ratios are identified as the winners for each of six mileage-based divisions. These carriers then undergo an audit by independent experts to ensure the accuracy of their results.

TCA announced the names of the 18 division winners in January 2022 and invited them to submit further documentation about their overall safety programs, both on and off the highway, to be eligible for the grand prize. After review by a diverse industry panel of judges, the winning companies were deemed to have best demonstrated their commitment to improving safety on North America’s highways. The contest is sponsored by Great West Casualty Co., along with supporting sponsors Peterson Manufacturing Co. and Tenstreet.
