Customers of GPS Insight can now use a SMS (short message service) code to help locate vehicles, communicate with drivers or set up alerts for when a vehicle moves or arrives at a location, all through cell phone text-messaging technology.

In addition to the new dedicated short code, GPS-GPS (477-477), GPS Insight has added “mobile maps” to give cell phones the ability to see a fleet’s current position and status. The company has been working with Cellit on the SMS technology.

“Our SMS implementation also allows for easy messaging to and from dispatch, as well as "SMS Notes" which allow drivers to comment on their activity for inclusion in a stop report,” said Robert Donat, president. “Unlike email-based text messaging and alerts, our customers do not need to know the wireless carrier for each cell phone number, which is impractical for large implementations.”
