LTL carrier Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL) said it is installing PeopleNet's fleet-management system on its 5,100 trucks

In an effort to get ahead of the technology curve when it comes to electronic logbooks -- yet also gather critical operating data more easily-- LTL carrier Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL) said it is installing PeopleNet's fleet-management system on its 5,100 trucks.

According to Barry Craver, Thomasville, NC-based ODFL's director of freight processing applications, PeopleNet will be installed across the fleet. Although the carrier plans to still use handheld computers for P&D drivers, those devices will relay the information through the PeopleNet unit in the truck, providing more powerful transmission, better reception and improved coverage.

Additionally, Craver noted that ODFL plans to use PeopleNet's system to collect other data from the truck to power additional applications, such as eDriver Logs – PeopleNet's electronic onboard recorder (EOBR) for automatically gathering hours of service (HOS) information – along with Pacos, a geofencing application, and PeformX to monitor vehicle and driver performance to better control fuel costs.
