Outpost launches second-generation gate automation platform to improve gate efficiency

The kiosk can be installed in as little as one day, a timeline previously unachievable in an industry where deployments often take months.

Key takeaways

  • Outpost’s kiosk installs in one day using preassembled hardware, requiring only power and data connectivity.
  • Engine-canceling microphones let drivers speak without shutting engines, improving gate throughput and experience.
  • AI gate automation can cut operating costs up to 70% by replacing manual staffing with computer vision and remote ops.

Outpost recently launched its second-generation gate automation platform, adding a new kiosk, expanded machine vision capabilities, and operational tools designed to automate facility gate and security operations. The company, which owns, operates, and automates truck terminals, processes more than 3 million gate events annually across its network and customer sites.

According to Greg Akselrod, chief technology officer at Outpost, the kiosk arrives in two preassembled, pre-wired sections that include cameras, microphones, screens, a license scanner, and keypad for rapid deployment. Installation requires stacking the two units, bolting them into place, and connecting power and either wired data or cellular/Starlink connectivity.

Once online, the system is pre-provisioned to begin processing gate events through the cloud. The design reduces the need for traditional infrastructure such as overhead camera arrays and multiple lane installations, which typically extend deployment timelines into months.

Outpost also built the system to handle operational challenges common at gates, including diesel engine noise. The company developed engine-canceling microphones using custom hardware and AI-based audio processing tuned specifically for high-decibel truck environments, allowing drivers to communicate without shutting off engines or exiting the cab.

Akselrod stated that the system is also designed for resilience and reduced downtime through redundant hardware, continuous remote monitoring, and automated failover systems. When exceptions occur, such as unreadable documents or unusual driver inputs, the platform routes cases to remote operators who receive full context, including images, audio, and system data. Each event is logged to improve model performance over time.

Additional platform features:

  • Integrated displays: Dual screens at truck and car height provide real-time transcription in multiple languages and on-site navigation with yard maps and turn-by-turn directions to assigned spaces or dock doors.
  • Reefer monitor recognition: Updated computer vision models read temperature and fuel levels from reefer monitors, creating a verified record of trailer condition at arrival and departure.
  • Multi-camera vehicle tracking: The platform correlates data across multiple cameras, improving vehicle matching accuracy and reducing the need for human review compared to traditional systems.
  • Advanced seal, lock, and latch verification: Computer vision analyzes seal and latch conditions for presence, integrity, and tampering indicators, reducing reliance on manual inspection for high-value and temperature-controled freight.
  • Dedicated driver’s license scanner: Credential scanning enables identity verification directly at the kiosk without mobile devices or secondary workflows.

“This is the first system of its kind that deploys in one day and eliminates costly gate labor while improving facility efficiency and security,” said Akselrod. “Every upgrade in this release is based on learnings across millions of production gate events, from inspection accuracy to driver throughput to exception management. By running the platform across our own network of 30+ terminals, we experience the edge cases, environmental extremes, operational bottlenecks, and driver friction firsthand, allowing us to solve problems on our own turf before a customer ever experiences them.”
