Volvo Trucks North America has announced that Phoneix-based Knight Transportation will begin taking delivery of 370 new SCR-equipped EPA2010-compliant Volvo VN tractors. The trucks will be powered by Volvo D13 engines equipped with SCR emissions aftertreatment systems.
Knight, which runs about 3,000 Volvos in its fleet, has ordered the VNL670 model, which features a full-height, raised-roof sleeper compartment. Their Volvo D13 engines will be rated at 425 hp and 1,450/1,750 lbs.-ft. of torque and will have Volvo’s Eco-Torque feature.
“We want to have this new technology from Volvo,” said Dave Williams, Knight Transportation vp of equipment and maintenance. “We will gain fuel economy. We’ve tested the technology and we’re comfortable with it. These trucks are better for the environment and they’re better for us.”
Volvo said its SCR system produces near-zero emissions while meeting the EPA2010 regulations and improving fuel economy by up to 5% .
“Knight Transportation made an important statement with this order,” said Scott Kress, Volvo Trucks senior vp–sales & marketing. “Volvo has invested many years of research, development and testing in SCR technology and we know it is clearly the best way to reduce emissions while improving fuel economy. We’re gratified Knight’s management recognized the benefits of Volvo’s technology, and we think their example will help others in the industry make the same choice.”
