Exhibiting fuel economy improvements over 15W-40 heavy-duty CJ-4 oils, Chevron’s new Delo 400 LE SAE 10W-30 oil also performed well in durability testing on engines from several manufacturers, the company said.

The low-viscosity 10W-30 showed a 1% fuel economy improvement over 15W-40 grade diesel oils and a 0.5% improvement over 5W-40 grade synthetic lubricants, Chevron said, in announcing the results of its testing.

According to the company, though, durability was not compromised. Testing the oil on a number of engine platforms, including the Detroit Diesel DD15, Cummins ISX, Mack MP7 and DAF 12.9 liter, Chevron said the results indicate wear levels and oil drain internvals that “fleets have come to expect from the leading 15W-40 motor oils.”

The 10W-30 was also tested on 2010 engines from Volvo and showed similar durability and fuel economy results, according to the company, citing its proprietary Isosyn Technology, which it said combines highly refined base oils with advanced additives to create products that rival synthetic lubricants as a primary reason for the results.

“Isosyn Technology is what differentiates Delo from the competition,” said Len Badal, commercial enterprise manager, Chevron Global Lubricants. “This unique Chevron Delo technology makes synthetics and synthetic-blends unnecessary from a cost and performance standpoint in all but the most extreme environments.”

Delo 400 LE SAE 10W-30 oil exceeds the requirements for API CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4, CG-4, CF-4 SM, SL; Caterpillar ECF-2, ECF-3; Cummins CES 20081; Volvo VDS-4; and Renault RLD 3, according to Chevron. The company said its testing also showed improved wear control for valve-train, bearings, rings and liners; oxidation control; soot dispersancy; piston deposit control and oil consumption control over API CI-4 Plus standard.
