Recall Roundup: Ford F-150, Altec, and Wabash recalls raise fleet safety and compliance concerns

Transmission, lighting, and control issues in Ford F-150 trucks drive large-scale safety recall actions for fleets.

Key takeaways

  • NHTSA issued recalls for Ford, Altec, and Wabash due to safety and compliance defects.
  • Ford F-150 recalls involve transmission downshifts, lighting behavior, and gear selection issues.
  • Altec and Wabash recalls address missing interlocks and rear impact guard bolt tightening concerns.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued recall notices for commercial vehicles, including brands from Altec, Ford, and Wabash.

Owners of the affected vehicles should be contacted via U.S. mail over the next two months, but fleet and independent owners of these vehicles can contact the NHTSA Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit nhtsa.gov for more details. More information on each recall can be found below.

Altec AT models’ transmission park interlock may be missing

Altec Industries is recalling certain 2014-2026 AT Series aerial device vehicles. The transmission park interlock may be missing, allowing the aerial device to operate while the chassis is not in park. An aerial device that operates while the vehicle is in gear or neutral can cause unexpected vehicle movement and increase the risk of injury.

This recall potentially affects 4,923 vehicles. Altec will update the electrical harness and control modules. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 7. Owners may contact Altec customer service at 877-462-5832. Altec's number for this recall is CSN-3331.

Ford F-150 models’ daytime running lights may not dim

Ford is recalling certain 2018-2020 F-150 vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall number 20V097. When the headlight switch is turned from "Autolamps" to "Headlamps On," the daytime running lamps (DRLs) may remain fully bright instead of dimming to parking lamps as intended. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices and Associated Equipment." Daytime running lamps that do not dim may reduce the visibility of other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.

This recall potentially affects 91,198 vehicles. Dealers will reprogram the body control module software. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 6. Owners may contact customer service at 866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26C28.

Ford F-150 models’ unexpected downshift can cause loss of control

Ford is recalling certain model year 2014 F-150 vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall number 24V444. A loss of signal between the transmission output shaft speed sensor and the powertrain control module (PCM) can cause the transmission to unexpectedly downshift into first gear. Unexpectedly downshifting into first gear may result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

This recall potentially affects 44,963 vehicles. Dealers will update the PCM software. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 6. Owners may contact customer service at 866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S45.

Ford F-150 models’ unintended vehicle movement

Ford is recalling certain 2018 F-150 vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall number 17V669. Quickly moving the shift lever from Park to Drive may cause a loss of gear indication on the instrument cluster display and a momentary selection of an unintended gear, such as Reverse or Neutral. Unintended gear selection may cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction, increasing the risk of crash or injury.

This recall potentially affects 10,742 vehicles. Dealers will update the powertrain control module software. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 6. Owners may contact customer service at 866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S42.

Wabash models’ insufficient rear impact protection

Wabash is recalling certain 2027 Wabash van trailers. The bumper tube bolts may have been improperly tightened, reducing the protection provided by the rear impact guard. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 223, "Rear Impact Guards." An improperly installed guard may not sufficiently protect a following vehicle, increasing the risk of injury during a rear-end crash.

This recall potentially affects 920 vehicles. Dealers will tighten the bumper tube bolts. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 14. Owners may contact Wabash customer service at 765-771-5404.
