Cummins Inc. announced a phased product launch strategy for its Model Year 2027 engine lineup.
The manufacturer plans to leverage EPA's proposed NOx flexibilities to roll out its next-generation HELM X10 and X15 platforms via a measured ramp, keeping current legacy engines in production to minimize operational disruption for fleets and OEMs.
The strategy aims to give the commercial trucking industry additional runway to adapt to 2027 regulatory requirements after two years of shifting compliance timelines around emissions standards.
“Our long-term product strategy has not changed,” said Jennifer Rumsey, chair and CEO of Cummins Inc. “This is about improving the transition, not changing the destination. A phased production ramp will allow us to support customers while building confidence in our new products through real-world operation and maintaining our focus on quality.”
Cummins's new engine rollout schedule
Cummins outlined the following transition timelines for its heavy- and medium-duty powerplants:
- X15 heavy-duty platform: Limited production of the MY2027 X15 engine will begin in January 2027, tailored to individual OEM integration schedules. Cummins expects to hit full production on the platform by Q4 2027. The current-generation X15 will remain available alongside the new engine throughout the transition phase.
- X10 platform: Limited production of the MY2027 X10 will also start in January 2027, with full production slated for Q3 2027. The current X12 and L9 engines used across truck and vocational applications will remain available during the phase-in.
- B-Series medium-duty platform: The next-generation B-series platform is scheduled to launch in January 2028. The current B6.7 engine will remain available throughout 2027.
What this means for fleets
By staggering full-rate manufacturing, Cummins can offer truck manufacturers and fleets a blend of early engine technologies and more familiar powertrains.
However, Cummins cautioned that these transition plans remain tied to the regulatory process. The company noted that its current timeline is based on preliminary assessments of the EPA's proposed rule and warned that product plans and build schedules could be adjusted if final regulatory text differs significantly from current proposals.
