MaxxForce big bore diesels add engine brake option

LOUISVILLE, KY. Navistar has increased both power and braking ability for its MaxxForce big bore diesel engines for 2010. The company made the announcement Thursday night at the Mid-America Trucking Show.

MaxxForce 13 models will include two new 450-hp. offerings, one delivering 1,700 lbs.-ft. of torque and the other with multi-torque output of 1,550/1,700 lbs.-ft. There is also a 430 hp. MaxxForce 13 with multi-torque output of 1,550/1,700 lbs.-ft. and a MaxxForce 11 rated at 365 hp. with 1,250 lbs.-ft. of torque.

Top ratings remain at 475 hp and 1,700 lbs.-ft. of torque for the MaxxForce 13 and 390 hp and 1,450 lbs.-ft. of torque for the MaxxForce 11.

“For the Class 8 market, the name of the game is power,” said Jim Hebe, Navistar vp-North American sales operations. “MaxxForce big bore engines bring the power, along with other benefits critical to our customers, such as fuel efficiency, a smooth, quiet ride and a high-strength CGI block that delivers durability and extra payload—without added weight.”

The company also announced that is MaxxForce 13 line of Advanced EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) engines, which power the International ProStar Plus linehaul tractor, the TranStar regional haul tractor and the PayStar severe service tractor, have received certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

To help slow the vehicles, Navistar has added a new, optional MaxxForce Engine Brake from Jacobs. The brake is available on both the MaxxForce 11 and 13 engines. It is fully integrated with vehicle controls and the truck’s anti-lock braking system.

The three-stage, compression-release brake offers maximum downhill braking performance from 351 to 398 braking hp at 1,900 to 2,100 rpm for the MaxxForce 11. The MaxxForce 13 receives maximum downhill braking performance at 415 to 470 braking hp at 1,900 to 2,100 rpm.

It is factory-installed or can be retrofit by dealers.

“The MaxxForce Engine Brake is designed with all the premium features Jacobs Vehicle Systems offers, assuring our International truck customers they have the most capable engine brake in the industry,” Hebe said.
