The Kenworth C500 will sunset this year, but Kenworth isn’t holding out on the extreme-duty segment. The large truck manufacturer debuted a replacement for the C500, the Kenworth C580, at ConExpo in Las Vegas this week.

The all-new Kenworth C580 “marks a new era in extreme-duty performance,” Kevin Haygood, Kenworth’s assistant general manager for sales and marketing, said in a release.

“The Kenworth C580 blends the proven durability of the C500 chassis with the modern comfort, technology, and integration of Kenworth’s latest cab platform,” the company announced. The C580 features a Cummins X15 engine, capable of 605 hp and 2,050 lb.-ft. of torque. Buyers can pair the Cummins engine with a range of transmissions, including manual, Allison 4000 and 6000 Series automatics, and the Eaton EndurantXD Pro automated transmission—a first for the extreme-duty segment, Kenworth said.

The C580 is available in single- or twin-steer axle configurations; the front-drive axle enables 4x4, 6x6, 8x8, and 10x10 configurations. It’s capable of hauling a gross combination  weight of up to 1 million lb.

The Kenworth C500, introduced in 1972, has “been to the Arctic in the oilfields; in Borneo hauling logs and coal; in Asia transporting massive mining equipment; and deep in the Amazon hauling transformers,” Haygood said. “They’ve gone where no other truck could go, and now the new C580 will do the same, handling the most demanding jobs on—and off—the road.”

What allows the truck to handle these tough conditions is a large, 1,780-sq.-in. cooling module, allowing the truck to handle high-horsepower operation in “stationary, high-altitude, and extreme-heat environments,” Kenworth stated. Further, full-length parent frame rails support specialized vocational applications, and standard dual 13-inch cowl-mounted ERA air cleaners offer ease of service and high performance.

Comfort, tech, and durability features of the Kenworth C580

Kenworth C500 drivers will appreciate the update in the C580. The C580 cab features improved visibility with a larger windshield and sloped hood. The cab might even feel roomier, as the C580 features more space between the front two seats compared to the C500.

Bringing the extreme-duty truck into the 21st century, the C580 is available with Kenworth’s 15-inch digital cluster display. The C580 is also available with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Kenworth’s TruckTech+ Remote Diagnostics.

Extreme-duty applications require extreme-duty durability, and the Kenworth C580 was “designed with durability in mind,” according to the brand. The C580’s exterior wiring harnesses are abrasion-resistant and double-wrapped. The truck’s hood and fenders are made of sheet metal, and the truck features five-piece crossmembers for robustness. Additionally, the C580’s electrical architecture is similar to that of other Kenworth models.

“For more than 50 years, the C500 set the benchmark in severe-service applications around the world, operating in conditions and applications no other commercially available truck can,” Haygood said. “With the C580, we honor that legacy while delivering a more capable and technologically advanced truck that meets the expectations of today’s vocational customers.”

Kenworth anticipates C580 production to begin January 2027.
