Combining onboard computers, GPS tracking and wireless data communications, the Electronic Emergency Response Management System will speed up response to hazardous-material spills and provide those responding with fast access to information about the spill and proper remediation techniques, says the Spill Center, an environmental claims management firm.
Using a truck's existing wireless communications equipment, a driver can send an instant alert in the event of a hazmat incident. The patented system will then forward real-time information to the closest qualified responders.
A prototype of the system in Massachusetts fitted participating fire service and hazmat response vehicles with tracking devices that allowed the Spill Center to maintain a location database of their equipment to speed response.
