Longs Drug Stores Corp. has contracted with Penske Logistics to provide transportation services as the pharmacy chain re-assumes direct management of its two California general merchandise warehouses from a third-party vendor. The two warehouses serve the company’s 393 mainland stores.

“This transition has gone very smoothly,” said Terry Burnside, Long’s COO. “Our management teams are in place at both warehouses and they have already implemented important process improvements designed to get merchandise to the stores in a more timely and efficient manner.”

Longs currently operates 425 stores in six states. Annual per store sales average over $9.5 million. Through its contract, Penske Logistics will help coordinate freight transportation from the warehouses to Longs’ mainland stores.
