A tractor-trailer traveling at 55 mph during a white-out snow storm jackknifed in the westbound lanes of I-80 near the Pennsylvania-Ohio border yesterday resulting in an 80-vehicle pileup. The accident in Mercer County, PA, occurred at 11:15 am, news wires said. Visibility was limited to about 20 feet at the time, Pennsylvania State Police said.
The lanes were blocked until last evening. State troopers, fire departments, ambulance personnel and state DOT employees responded to the accident.
Ten people were hospitalized with “varying degrees of injuries,” and at least 40 people suffered minor injuries, police said. No life-threatening injuries were reported.
