The August 2005 “Roads to Hell” cover received the National Design Gold Award for Front Cover-Computer Generated (80,000 or more circulation). Designed by senior art director Dan Zeis, this cover employs an eye-grabbing pothole-in-the-shape-of-America image to starkly illustrate at a glance what the cover story on America's crumbling highway infrastructure is all about.

The “Roads to Hell” two-part editorial series, which appeared in the August and September 2005 issues, garnered the Northeast Regional Gold Award for Feature Series. The articles examine why America's roads are failing and what can be done about it. Lead writers were David Cullen and Larry Kahaner, with contributions from Sean Kilcarr, Wendy Leavitt and Jim Mele.
