Goodyear has unveiled a new super single tire that provides enhanced mileage in severe-duty vocational applications.

The new 278 MSD replaces the G178 and owes its improved mileage to a 1 in. larger footprint, deeper tread depth, and special compounding.

Available in 385, 425, and 445/65R 22.5 sizes, the G278 MSD is an all position tire for on/off highway applications. The rugged criss-cross tread design helps to improve traction and repel water.

“Our customers working in on/off highway applications know the importance of having tires rugged enough to help resist cuts and damage caused by rocks,” said Donn Kramer, Goodyear's director of marketing for commercial tires. “It's an area where our engineers put extra emphasis in the design of the G278 MSD.”

Grooved angles with full-width interlocking protectors keep stones from imbedding and drilling into the tread, Goodyear said. Special compounding resists cuts, chips, and tears. The tire has a 30/32 in. tread depth and offers even wear, the company said.

Matching retreads in three sizes will be offered this summer.
