Penske Logistics (No. 16 on the FleetOwner 500: For-Hire) is rolling out a new AI platform across its network to improve load management.

After a successful six-month pilot, Penske decided to implement an AI agent from tech startup Augment. The system is already handling roughly 600,000 live loads and will quickly scale in 2026. Penske expects a 30-40% productivity gain as the platform cuts down routine, manual processes across the supply chain.

The logistics company’s new rollout is another example of how AI agents are finding their way into carriers’ workflows.

How will the AI freight platform work?

The companies say the agent can interact via email, phone, TMS, portals, and chat to free up human operators, from quoting through dispatch and tracking.

At their core, AI agents are large language models, yet unlike traditional LLMs that generate “responses based on the data used to train them” and being bound “by knowledge and reasoning limitations,” AI agents use tools in the backend “to obtain up-to-date information, optimize workflow, and create subtasks autonomously to achieve complex goals,” according to IBM.
