Volvo Group North America recently reached a settlement with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to resolve allegations related to emissions control descriptions on certain model year 2010–2016 engines installed in Volvo Group trucks sold in California. The company, which produces trucks and engines, said its internal review found no evidence of bad faith and confirmed the agreement includes no admission of liability.
The settlement includes a $12.5 million civil penalty, $71.0 million paid to CARB’s Air Pollution Control Fund, $108 million allocated to California emission-reduction projects subject to CARB approval, and $5 million in reimbursement of CARB costs. Volvo Group will also provide software updates and a partial warranty extension for approximately 7,200 model year 2014–2016 engines in California.
Volvo Group said the matter stems from issues disclosed nearly a decade ago and noted it has worked cooperatively with CARB throughout the process. The company added that it is not aware of any additional U.S. emissions investigations involving its engines. Financial impacts will be reflected in Q2 2026 results, with additional cash flow effects expected over the next five years.
