Cadec Global has released a white paper discussing 10 ways fleets can help the environment by going paperless through the use of electronic devices in the cab or over the internet.

The steps are:

  1. Using electronic driver logs through on-board computers (OBCs) and fleet management software, eliminating paperwork.
  2. Automating the fuel-tax calculation and reporting process, ensuring IFTA compliance and eliminating manual trip logs.
  3. Using electronic trip sheets, reducing the possibility of error or fraud.
  4. Using fleet management software to generate driver/vehicle inspection reports (DVIR) automatically.
  5. Generating electronic invoices on-site in real time, customizing and updating for better accuracy.
  6. Automatically capturing arrival and departure times for manifest and bill of landing documentation.
  7. Electronically capturing proof of delivery, eliminating handwriting the time in and out and odometer readings.
  8. Tracking delivery irregularities, entering over/short/damaged data through OBCs.
  9. Completing on-site quality validation tests without worrying about lost or misfiled documents.
  10. Keeping proper maintenance records at planned intervals, capturing data directly from the vehicles.

"Going paperless is one of the most ambitious and sought-after goals for businesses that own and operate a private delivery fleet," said Michael Baney, CEO of Cadec. "'Going green' - the desire to be more environmentally responsible - is one of the driving factors behind going paperless. But as this report demonstrates, going paperless can also have a significant impact on an organization's bottom line."
