Walmart Transportation, the private fleet arm of the retail giant, has been awarded the 2009 American Trucking Assns. (ATA) President’s Trophy for having the safest fleet in trucking in the large fleet category.

The fleet averaged just one preventable accident per 2.2-million miles driven. Walmart estimates its 8,000 drivers log more than 800-million miles per year, with each driver surpassing 100,000 miles annually.

“The Walmart private fleet is an important part of our company’s success,” said Chris Sultemeier, senior vp of transportation. “By offering the safest and most cost-efficient delivery of merchandise our drivers are a critical part of providing low prices to our customers. We appreciate the ATA’s recognition of our drivers who have earned this award through a day-to-day commitment to safety.”

The President’s Trophy judges carriers on safety accomplishments and safety records relative to others within their operational type and size range.
