Goodyear is celebrating the 90th anniversary of its famed Wingfoot Express truck line— which starting in April 1917 made nonstop runs from an Akron, OH tire factory to the company’s tire fabric mill in Connecticut.

Those routes were completed by a five-ton Packard with a 10-ft.-high specially built body, which was equipped with the industry’s first sleeper cab, said Goodyear.

“Back then we viewed truck drivers as heroes for making he perilous journeys that kept the flow of goods and raw materials moving,” said Steve McClellan, vp of Goodyear commercial tire systems. “Our perception hasn’t changed one bit.”
