Southbound 405 freeway closures planned in California

Feb. 21, 2012

Several complete closures of southbound lanes of the I-405 freeway — a major north-south route in Orange County, CA — are planned in upcoming days, according to Cal Trans.

The southbound I-405 freeway will be closed between the I-605 freeway and Valley View Street in Fountain Valley from midnight to 5 a.m. Wednesday morning. This will be a full closure of the southbound lanes, necessary to allow crews to perform minor demolition activities along the southbound I-405 / eastbound SR-22 connector as they prepare to advance construction of the new SR-22/I-405 carpool connector, according to Cal Trans.

The southbound I-405 freeway will also be closed between midnight and 5 a.m. from the I-605 freeway to Seal Beach Boulevard in Seal Beach nightly from Wednesday night, Feb. 22 through Saturday, Feb. 25. This work is necessary to allow crews to pour concrete for the stem and soffit portion of the 7th Street bridge, Cal Trans said. The soffit is the underside of the bridge and the stem is the center part of the bridge.

Highway officials have made the following recommended detours:

• From the southbound I-405, exit Studebaker Road stay in the right lane and proceed south on Studebaker Road, turn left on Westminster Avenue. To access the SB I-405 freeway continue east on Westminster Avenue to access the SB I-405 on-ramp. To access the EB SR-22 freeway continue east on Westminster Avenue and turn left on Goldenwest Street to access the EB SR-22 on-ramp.

• From the southbound I-605 freeway take the Spring Street exit and turn right, proceed west on Spring Street and turn left on Studebaker Road, turn left on Westminster Avenue. To access the SB I-405 freeway continue east on Westminster Avenue to access the SB I-405 on-ramp. To access the EB SR-22 freeway continue east on Westminster Avenue and turn left on Goldenwest Street to access the EB SR-22 on-ramp.

The dates and times of the closures may change depending on weather, Cal Trans said.
