Tampa road closures due to Republican convention

Aug. 27, 2012

Hurricane Isaac isn’t the only traffic trouble drivers will face in Tampa this week. Traffic will be impeded by many major road closures including several downtown streets and bridges, the Selmon Expressway, and part of northbound Bayshore Boulevard because of the GOP national convention. The roads will be closed through Thursday, Aug. 30.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn warned drivers to “take extra time if they have to make their way around town, particularly if they have to move around downtown.”

City officials weren’t sure how Hurricane Isaac will affect road closures and alternate routes.

“The closures downtown will not change. The routes could change for the delegations and the delegation movement depending on the weather circumstances. It literally will change by the hour, a lot will be determined by the wind gusts,” Mayor Buckhorn told WTSP News.
