Your Feb. 10 Pre-Trip: Rhode Island truck toll plan up for vote

Feb. 10, 2016

Here are five things worth knowing today:

1. The Great Truck Toll Debate in Rhode Island may be reaching a conclusion. According to WPRI TV, the state’s House of Representatives is set to vote today on a bill that would pay for road and bridge repairs on the backs of truckers with a truck-only toll. The station’s website has more.

2. How can the industry get dangerous drivers and trucking companies off the highways? According to the NTSB, the answer may be higher insurance premiums. That’s a suggestion from the board, according to a report in the Daily Herald.

3. General Motors is recalling nearly 500,000 SUVs and pickups because of potential brake problems. The recall covers Silverado, Sierra and Tahoe vehicles, according to KRMG.

4. The West Virginia Senate is preparing to debate a bill that would keep existing tolls on the West Virginia Turnpike, but use some of the money to projects in the Southern end of the state. The Bluefield Daily Telegraph has the story.

5. A new study reported on by Phys.org says that the fossil fuel consumption will continue to rise unless global action is taken to attach a price to carbon dioxide emissions and clean energy technology.
