Mark Binner named TCA Highway Angel for rescuing driver during Iowa storm

The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) recently named ABF Freight driver Mark Binner a TCA Highway Angel for rescuing an injured truck driver trapped inside an overturned tractor during severe storm conditions in southwestern Iowa.

On June 11, Binner was traveling near McPaul, Iowa, when he encountered severe weather, including high winds, torrential rain, and tornadic activity. As conditions deteriorated, he witnessed a tractor overturn in the storm.

“The wind was crazy, and the rain was super heavy,” Binner said. “I was following a couple of other trucks, and everybody started slowing down. One of the trucks ahead of me tipped over from the wind. I’d been through a rollover myself years ago, so I just wanted to pay it forward and help the guy out.”

Binner stopped, grabbed his medical kit, and ran through the rain toward the overturned truck. Binner found the driver trapped inside and struggling to open the passenger-side door. Binner, wearing work gloves, pulled on the damaged windshield in an effort to create an escape route. A gust of wind caught the windshield, ripping it free from his hands.

“He was standing inside the cab because it was lying on its side,” Binner said. “I pulled the windshield out and helped him climb through the opening. Then we went back to my truck, where I got out my first aid kit and cleaned up some cuts from the shattered glass. We stayed there until the police arrived.”

The driver was covered in blood, so Binner provided first aid, helping control the bleeding before escorting him through the storm to the safety of his ABF Freight tractor. Once inside the cab and out of the elements, Binner called 911 and remained with the driver until emergency responders arrived.

“It was a pretty simple deal,” he said. “I just went back, pulled him out, and sat him in my truck for a little while. It wasn’t that big of a deal.”

Orange EV establishes the Orange EV Cares Scholarship at KCKCC

Orange EV recently launched the Orange EV Cares Scholarship at Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC), endowed through a gift from Orange EV Co-Founder Wayne Mathisen. 

"Since Orange EV's founding in 2012, our company's success has been a result of attracting and developing the best talent," Mathisen said. "This scholarship is our way of investing in the Orange EV team members that have invested in us."

The Orange EV Cares Scholarship is available to full-time Orange EV employees, with preference given to students enrolled in a KCKCC degree or certificate program and those demonstrating financial need. Applicants must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, and awards must be used toward educational expenses. Spring applications open September15 and close November 5; fall applications open March 15 and close May 5. 

In addition to the scholarship, Orange EV is serving as a Clubhouse Sponsor of the Blue Devil Golf Classic, KCKCC's fundraising event supporting student-athletes across the college's seven athletic programs through scholarships, equipment, team travel, and facility improvements.

CVSA awards $5,000 college scholarships to two high school graduates

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) recently revealed that high school graduates Camille Fontenot and Elia Smith will each receive $5,000 toward their college education as the recipients of the alliance’s college scholarship awards.

“CVSA is committed to supporting individuals who demonstrate excellence, leadership, and a desire to make a difference,” Erick McGuire, CVSA president with the Florida Highway Patrol, said. “These scholarship recipients exemplify those qualities, and we are proud to recognize their accomplishments while helping them take the next step in their educational journey.”

College scholarship recipient Camille Fontenot is the daughter of Kevin Fontenot with the Louisiana State Patrol. She will attend Louisiana State University-Eunice and plans to major in nursing. Elia Smith is the daughter of Jared Smith with the Kansas Corporation Commission. She plans to major in chemistry at Northeastern University.

Throughout her high school career, Camille Fontenot has demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence, community service, and extracurricular involvement. 

“I am most interested in pediatrics and am really drawn to oncology,” Fontenot said. “Helping and caring for the sick is something I am passionate about. I strongly believe that providing friendly, trustworthy medical treatment to patients and their families can positively impact their lives in times when they may need it most.”

The second scholarship award recipient, Elia Smith, plans to major in chemistry.

“I’m drawn to chemistry and pharmaceutical development because I am motivated through problem solving and bridging gaps,” Smith said. “I’m fascinated by how the human experience is impacted by chemistry and how that impact can be manipulated by drug development and distribution into our society.”

Smith was on her high school’s honor roll for all four years, was a National Honor Society member, and received the College Board Rural and Small-Town Recognition Award.

Americold and Feed the Children celebrate 10 years of helping families access food and resources

Americold and Feed the Children recently recognized 10 years of partnership focused on expanding access to food and resources for families experiencing food insecurity across the U.S.

Over the course of the partnership, Americold has contributed more than $2.4 million to support Feed the Children’s programs, which helped provide more than 2.1 million lb. of food and resources to more than 2.7 million individuals and 700,000 families nationwide.

That impact continues through local engagement, including in Atlanta, Americold’s headquarters community, where the anniversary was marked alongside a Feed the Children Resource Rally benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta. During the rally, associates helped distribute food, personal care essentials, and household items to approximately 400 families.
