Winn-Dixie Stores Inc, based in Jacksonville FL, has announced sales results for its second quarter of fiscal 2004.

Sales for the 16 weeks ended Jan 7, 2004, totaled $3.6 billion, a loss of $225.5 million, or 6.0% compared with the same quarter a year earlier. For the 28 weeks ended Jan 7, 2004, sales were $6.2 billion, a decrease of $389.6 million, or 5.9% versus the prior year.

Net loss for the 16 weeks ended Jan 7, 2004, was $79.5 million, compared with net earnings of $91.4 million for the same quarter a year earlier. For the current year, net loss amounted to $78.3 million, versus net earnings of $126.2 million in the previous fiscal year.
