US Foods acquires Sparta Imports
US Foods, one of the nation’s leading distributors, has announced the purchase of Sparta Imports Inc, based in Columbia SC. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
“US Foods is pleased to welcome Sparta Imports, which is recognized throughout the region as one of the leading sources of authentic, high-quality Greek and Mediterranean specialties,” said Durwood Owens, US Foods Columbia Division president. ”Sparta’s expertise and product offerings will significantly increase the variety of specialty products available to US Foods customers.”
Owens said Sparta’s customers will benefit from access to the full range of food and foodservice products offered by US Foods. Members of Sparta’s sales and procurement team will join US Foods.
With more than $20 billion in annual revenue, US Foods is the 10th-largest private company in America. Many of the entities that make up US Foods were founded in the 19th century, including one that sold provisions to travelers heading west during the 1850s gold rush. US Foods offers more than 350,000 national brand products and its own “exclusive brand” items, ranging from fresh meats and produce to prepared and frozen foods. The company employs about 25,000 people in more than 60 locations nationwide, and provides food and related products to more than 250,000 customers.
