Thermo King, a manufacturer of transport temperature control systems for a variety of mobile applications and a brand of Ingersoll Rand, is celebrating 75 years of trusted expertise, innovation, partnership, and performance in 2013.

The firm’s sites around the world, including more than 500 employees at the manufacturing facility in Bloomington MN, are commemorating this milestone with events throughout May 2013.

Thermo King’s facility in Bloomington celebrated May 4 with an open house and site tours, games and family activities, a presentation from company president Ray Pittard, and a celebratory luncheon.

“For 75 years, Thermo King has been the refrigerated transport expert, providing the ultimate assurance of freshness, comfort, reliability, efficiency, and performance for our customers every day,” said Ray Pittard, president of Thermo King North America. “Over the next 75 years and beyond, we will keep delivering what matters: more innovative, sustainable products and services.”

The firm’s operations in Bloomington have benefited the local community, with a history of supporting organizations that enhance the lives of area residents and institutions. In 2012, the site contributed to community programs such as Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People (VEAP), the United Way, the Bloomington Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, and the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The site hosted a food drive April 29 with the goal of collecting 7,500 pounds of food for area food shelves.

Thermo King founder Joseph Numero and chief engineer Frederick Jones patented the first successful mechanical refrigeration in 1939. They developed a refrigeration system for a customer’s truck that allowed refrigerated and frozen food to be confidently shipped over long distances for the first time. This pioneering mechanical refrigeration unit replaced blocks of ice previously used to cool semi-trailers, transforming the industry. Today Thermo King is a global leader in transportation temperature control systems for mobile applications including truck, trailer, bus, rail, and marine.
