Key takeaways
- CVSA Operation Safe Driver Week runs from July 12–18, targeting reckless, careless, and dangerous driving behaviors on public roads.
- Law enforcement will focus on speeding, distracted driving, fatigue, seat belt use, and unsafe lane changes with warnings or citations.
- Driver education resources for teens, new drivers, and commercial drivers aim to reduce crashes through behavior change and awareness.
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) recently scheduled Operation Safe Driver Week for July 12–18 and will focus on identifying unsafe driving behaviors through law enforcement visibility and outreach. The alliance, which works to improve commercial motor vehicle safety compliance, will have law enforcement issue warnings or citations to drivers engaging in risky behaviors.
Unsafe driving behaviors include speeding, distracted driving, fatigued or drowsy driving, following too closely, impaired driving, failure to wear a seat belt, unsafe lane changes, and disregarding traffic signals.
The focus of this year’s event is reckless, careless, or dangerous driving. Reckless driving is defined as operating a vehicle in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property. Careless or dangerous driving is defined as operating a vehicle without due care and attention or reasonable consideration for other motorists or people on the road.
Driver education efforts are also part of the program, with resources aimed at teen drivers, new drivers, and commercial motor vehicle drivers. CVSA provides public service announcement videos and distributes Operation Safe Driver Week postcards at no cost to industry and enforcement members.
